The goal was clear:
Combine loading and weighing into a single process they could bet their margins on.
By weighing trucks and rail cars directly within the loading bays, a Michigan-based Agricultural Cooperative could eliminate unnecessary steps, improve loading accuracy, and reduce disruptions throughout the facility, increasing efficiency.
The solution needed to:
- Accommodate both trucks and rail cars
- Fit within existing loading bays
- Meet hazardous area requirements
- Work within site-specific foundation constraints
- Integrate with the facility's PLC network
- Provide accurate, reliable weighments during loading

THE CHALLENGE
When you're moving large volumes of product by both truck and rail, accuracy matters long before the load leaves the facility.
A Michigan-based Agricultural Cooperative was facing challenges with obtaining accurate outbound weights for both trucks and rail cars. Their team wanted a better solution that would allow them to verify weights during the loading process rather than weighing vehicles after loading was complete.
The challenge wasn't simple.
The facility had limited space available for new scales, and the desired installation area needed to accommodate both truck and rail traffic within existing bulk loading bays. The loading areas were also classified as Class 2, Division 2 hazardous locations, and one bay presented additional foundation limitations that needed to be addressed.
Finding a solution that could meet all of those requirements without disrupting operations required a thoughtful approach.
WHAT'S AT RISK
The existing process required trucks and rail cars to be loaded first and weighed later.
If a load was underweight, additional material had to be added.
If a load was overweight, material had to be removed.
Either way, the result was lost time, additional labor, unnecessary vehicle movement, and a logistics nightmare.
The company wanted greater confidence in every load before it left the loading bay.

The solution was specifically configured to fit a Michigan-based Agricultural Cooperative's unique operating environment and included:

- A shallow foundation design for constrained site conditions
- Steel deck construction with top-side load cell access
- Hazardous area rated equipment and scoreboards
- PLC integration for monitoring and data collection
By installing the scales directly within the bulk loading bays, operators could now verify weights as material was being loaded rather than after the process was complete.

Trucks and rail cars were loaded in the bulk bays and then weighed at another location, creating additional movement, potential delays, and the possibility of reloading when weights were incorrect.
Operators can load and weigh at the same time, verifying accuracy in real time and reducing the need for corrections, rework, and unnecessary movement throughout the facility.
