From Repair Anxiety to Operational Certainty

Keeping 200–500 Trucks Moving While Modernizing Critical Scale Infrastructure

Republic Services
Profile
Republic Services is a Phoenix-based environmental services company and the second-largest waste management provider in the U.S. It provides collection, transfer, and disposal of non-hazardous solid waste, recycling, and energy services, operating hundreds of collection operations, transfer stations, recycling centers, and active landfills nationwide.
Goal

The objective was to create a portable propane filling system capable of supporting a nationwide retail rollout.

To do that, Industrial Propane Services needed a weighing platform that could:

  • Consistently achieve target fill weights
  • Operate reliably in industrial retail environments
  • Support portable deployment across locations
  • Deliver the accuracy required for long-term success

The weighing system couldn't simply work.

It had to become a dependable part of a repeatable nationwide process.

THE CHALLENGE

For a busy waste management facility, scale downtime isn't just an inconvenience…

It's a bottleneck that impacts the entire operation.

This regional landfill was processing between 200 and 500 trucks every day using aging truck scales that had reached a point where repairs were becoming increasingly costly, and reliability was becoming uncertain.

The facility faced a difficult reality.

The existing scales were showing signs of significant wear, critical components were aging, and the risk of an unexpected failure was growing. At the same time, shutting down operations to replace the scales wasn't a realistic option.

Every truck still needed to move. Every load still needed to be weighed. And every day of downtime carried operational and financial consequences.

WHAT'S AT RISK

At a landfill, everything depends on traffic flow.

If the scales stop working, trucks stop moving.

When trucks stop moving, traffic backs up, customers become frustrated, revenue is delayed, and operations quickly become difficult to manage.

The facility's leadership team wasn't just concerned about replacing old equipment.

They were concerned about avoiding disruption.

The challenge was finding a way to modernize critical infrastructure without interrupting the daily flow of hundreds of trucks.

THE CECH APPROACH

Rather than focusing solely on equipment, Cech focused on the operational realities of the site.

The solution included a phased modernization of the existing pit-style truck scales using new concrete scale decks and advanced digital load cell technology.

More importantly, the installation plan was designed around operational continuity.

By carefully sequencing the work, Cech ensured that at least two scales remained operational throughout the project, including during construction and concrete cure periods.

This approach allowed the facility to continue processing trucks while critical infrastructure improvements were completed.

THE TRANSFORMATION & KEY INSIGHTS
TRANSFORMATION

From managing aging equipment and constant repair concerns to operating with greater confidence, visibility, and reliability.

Instead of worrying about when the next failure might occur, the facility now benefits from modern weighing infrastructure designed to support daily operations and prevent unexpected disruptions.

Because when hundreds of trucks depend on your scales every day, certainty isn't a luxury.

It's essential.

KEY INSIGHT

Unexpected downtime can be costly.

Whether you're managing aging infrastructure, planning a major upgrade, or looking for better visibility into your weighing systems, Cech helps you modernize with solutions designed to keep operations moving.

When it has to be right, Cech it!

WHAT MADE THIS DIFFERENT

Many scale providers would have focused on the equipment itself.

Cech focused on the outcome.

The project required more than a technical solution. It required careful planning, patience, and a commitment to understanding the customer's concerns.

Over time, Cech worked to rebuild trust through consistent communication, practical recommendations, and a low-pressure approach focused on solving the customer's problem rather than simply making a sale.

Instead of selling a scale replacement, Cech delivered a modernization strategy that protected daily operations while preparing the facility for the future.

THE RESULTS

The facility successfully modernized its weighing infrastructure without a single day of operational shutdown.

Hundreds of trucks continued moving through the site every day while construction was underway.

The new digital load cell system provides enhanced diagnostics and greater visibility into scale performance, helping identify potential issues before they become costly interruptions.

What was once a constant source of concern became a dependable part of the operation.

  • Zero operational downtime during installation
  • Continuous processing of 200–500 trucks per day throughout the project
  • Modern digital load cell technology with advanced diagnostics
  • Improved visibility into scale performance
  • Reduced risk of unexpected failures
  • Elimination of the ongoing break-fix cycle
  • Greater long-term operational reliability
BEFORE & AFTER
BEFORE

A high-volume facility relied on aging scales that required ongoing repairs, created uncertainty, and posed an increasing risk of unexpected downtime.

AFTER

A modernized weighing operation equipped with digital diagnostics, improved reliability, and a plan designed to keep trucks moving without interruption.
